South Korean company Hogreen Air, specializing in drone and aviation software development, has successfully utilized Long-Term Evolution (LTE) wireless communication technology, a fourth-generation wireless technology, to remotely control a drone in Germany from South Korea, covering a distance of 9,300km. This achievement raises expectations for the commercialization of long-range LTE drones.


On the 8th, starting from 2:00 PM for a duration of 30 minutes, Hogreen Air conducted an LTE drone demonstration event between Germany and South Korea at the grassy field of Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology. An employee dispatched to Germany controlled a 3.5kg rotating-wing drone equipped with an LTE module using a smartphone. The drone is expected to fly at a speed of 10km/h at an altitude of 80m above the ground, covering a distance of 200m. The event also included testing monitoring capabilities through real-time video transmission.


For the demonstration, Hogreen Air obtained approval for drone test flights from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Busan Regional Aviation Administration's Gwangju Airport branch office. Additionally, the company requested LTE network support and inspection from LG Uplus. To ensure safety in case of unforeseen incidents, on-site personnel included a remote frequency (RF) controller and a safety officer.


During the event, Hogreen Air plans to introduce LTE drone module solutions and announce various LTE drone systems for applications such as drone delivery in rural areas, real-time broadcasting, surveillance, disaster rescue activities, and more. The company aims to expedite the commercialization of long-range LTE drones.


Hogreen Air has developed and released drones that can use both traditional RF communication and LTE communication. The drones can be easily controlled by anyone through a smartphone application, utilizing a touch interface. LTE drones enable the identification of the last signal point through the Global Positioning System (GPS), reducing the risk of drone loss in the case of a no-control (NoCon) situation.


CEO Hong Sung-ho stated, "LTE drones are practically capable of long-distance operation and control without distance limitations," adding that, "Following this demonstration, we plan to strengthen marketing efforts to apply LTE drones in various industries."
